US Institute of Peace renamed after Trump

The US State Department on Thursday said it has renamed the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) as the “Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace,” describing the move as a tribute to what it called “the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history.”

In a brief statement on X, the department said: “Welcome to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come.” The building in Washington has already been rebranded with the new name.

USIP was created by Congress in 1984 as an independent, non-partisan institute aimed at preventing and resolving international conflict through research, training and peacebuilding programs. Over the past two decades, the institute played a notable role in Afghanistan, funding community peace initiatives, conducting research on conflict dynamics, and training Afghan civil society groups, mediators and officials during and after the US military presence.

The renaming follows a months-long political and legal battle over the administration’s attempts to assume direct control of USIP. Earlier this year, the government removed most of the institute’s leadership and staff, prompting lawsuits from former board members who argued the changes violated the body’s statutory independence. A lower court initially sided with them, but an appellate court later allowed the administration’s takeover to proceed pending further review.
