The Taliban governor in the northern province of Faryab has confiscated property belonging to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) as the mission prepared to close its local office, local sources told Amu on Wednesday.

The sources said UNAMA planned to shut its Faryab field office by the end of the year due to budget cuts and was transferring equipment and supplies to its office in Balkh province.

According to the sources, when UN staff attempted to move the items on Monday, Faryab’s Taliban governor, Abdul Ahad Fazli, blocked the transfer and seized the goods.

UNAMA has not commented on the reported confiscation, and Taliban have also made no public statement.

The incident comes as international organisations face increasing operational constraints in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have tightened control over aid work and imposed restrictions on staff movements, particularly those involving Afghan women.
