Iranian delegation visits Herat to boost trade, transit ties

A high-level Iranian delegation led by Gholamhossein Mozaffari, the governor of Khorasan Razavi province, arrived in Herat on Tuesday for bilateral discussions on trade and transport with Taliban officials, according to Iranian media.

The visit was made at the invitation of the Taliban governor for Herat, Noor Ahmad Islamjar, and follows Islamjar’s earlier trip to Mashhad this summer. Iranian officials said the talks aimed to follow up on agreements reached during that visit.

Mozaffari is accompanied by a 65-member delegation, mainly composed of private-sector representatives and business leaders, Iranian media reported. The Iranian group is expected to participate in a joint economic forum alongside Afghan counterparts and local business figures.

According to IRNA, the discussions cover a wide range of issues including transport, customs procedures, agriculture, mining, healthcare, tourism, and vocational education. Iranian officials said the goal is to strengthen economic ties and explore cross-border cooperation opportunities.

As part of the visit, Mozaffari and several delegates toured the Dogharoun customs terminal in Taybad and the Rozanak railway station in Khaf, key transit points near the Afghanistan-Iran border. The delegation is also scheduled to visit industrial facilities in Herat.

Islamjar had traveled to Mashhad in July for a three-day economic summit with Iranian officials. During that trip, multiple cooperation agreements were signed between Herat and Khorasan Razavi authorities.

The Herat-Mashhad corridor has gained significance amid ongoing trade tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with both sides exploring more stable regional trade routes.
