Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called for Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) members to jointly participate in infrastructure projects in Afghanistan.
At the CIS Heads of State summit, Mirziyoyev emphasized the significance of Afghanistan’s stability and proposed cooperation in rebuilding and developing the country’s infrastructure. According to Sherzod Asadov, the Uzbek presidential spokesman, Mirziyoyev also urged increased coordination among the diplomacy and intelligence bodies of CIS states to bolster regional security.
These remarks came shortly after the conclusion of the “Moscow format” talks on Afghanistan on Oct. 7. At that meeting, Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister of the Taliban, appealed to the international community to follow Russia’s example and recognize their rule.
Representatives from Russia, Belarus, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan attended the Moscow meeting. It marked the first time a Taliban delegation participated in such an international forum.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, publicly stated Moscow’s readiness to support the Taliban in counterterrorism efforts.
