A 13-member team from Afghanistan’s Zurkhaneh Federation has traveled to Iran to compete in the Asian Zurkhaneh martial arts championship.
Eleven Afghan athletes are competing in weight categories ranging from 50 kilograms to over 90 kilograms, in both team and individual events.
Zurkhaneh, a traditional martial art with roots in Persian culture, combines strength training with ritual and performance.
The competition, hosted in the Iranian city of Urmia, is the seventh edition of the Asian championship. Athletes from more than 20 countries are expected to take part from Oct. 8 to 11.
