Fawzia Koofi, a former MP and participant of Islamabad meeting, said on Monday that the situation in Afghanistan is “unbearable, especially for women,” and warned that only an inclusive government based on the people’s will and constitutional order can secure peace and lasting regional stability.
Koofi spoke at the opening of a two-day conference in Islamabad titled Toward Unity and Trust, co-organized by Women for Afghanistan and the South Asia Strategic Stability Institute.
The event brought together dozens of Afghan political figures, activists and women leaders to discuss the country’s future.
“This two-day dialogue brings together a diverse group of men and women from Afghanistan to reflect on their country’s future,” Koofi said. “Meaningful leadership, inclusive and genuine narratives, and a system that places people at the center of decision-making where rights are respected equally is needed.”
She described Pakistan as a pivotal partner in the process, emphasizing that “constructive engagement is essential to address shared concerns and build a foundation of mutual trust.”
According to a list seen by Amu, at least 36 political leaders, civil society activists, women and members of the Supreme Council of Resistance to Save Afghanistan and the National Movement for Peace and Justice were invited to the talks.
Organizers said the discussions aim to promote confidence-building, regional cooperation and a shared vision for Afghanistan’s political future.
