Afghan political groups to open two-day talks in Islamabad

A two-day meeting of Afghan political groups will begin Monday in Islamabad, organizers said, with nearly all invitees expected to attend, according to Amu sources.

The dialogue, titled “Towards Unity and Trust,” is organized by Women for Afghanistan (WFA) and the South Asian Strategic Stability Institute University. A statement from organizers says the aim is to create space for constructive discussion among Afghan leaders — women and men — and with their Pakistani counterparts.

The program is set in two parts: an Afghan-only dialogue on the country’s future, the requirements of democratic governance and meaningful participation of women, followed by Pak-Afghan discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, building trust and developing people-centric approaches to regional challenges.

Organizers say the process seeks to promote mutual understanding, improve coordination and define shared principles that support stability, the rule of law and a renewed commitment to women’s rights and inclusion. They add the dialogue is intended to deepen people-to-people ties between Afghans and Pakistanis and to support development and lasting peace.

The meeting, planned for Sept. 29–30, was previously postponed one time.

According to a list of the invitees, 36 participants — including political figures, civil society activists, women and members of the Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan and the National Movement for Peace and Justice — have been invited.
