The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved $3 million in emergency assistance for survivors of the Aug. 31 earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
Masatsugu Asakawa, ADB president, said in a statement on X that the funding will come from the bank’s Asia-Pacific Disaster Response Fund and will provide food assistance to about 60,000 people.
“In this moment of profound challenge, ADB reaffirms its solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and its commitment to deliver tangible, life-saving support,” he wrote.
Survivors, particularly in Kunar province, have complained that little aid has reached them weeks after the quake. Many say they still face severe shortages of food, shelter and hygiene supplies.
The earthquake left over 2,200 people dead and over 3,600 others wounded. Hundreds of houses were also destroyed.
