Iranian delegation in Kabul for trade talks

A high-ranking Iranian economic and trade delegation led by Industry, Mines and Trade Minister Seyed Mohammad Atabak arrived in Kabul on Monday for talks with Taliban officials.

The Taliban-run Ministry of Industry and Commerce said the visit aims to identify obstacles to bilateral trade and explore ways to expand cooperation in transit and joint investments.

The delegation is scheduled to meet with Taliban officials including their deputy chief minister’s office for economic affairs as well as the Taliban ministries of industry and commerce, mines and petroleum, and public works. Meetings with private-sector representatives are also planned.

In addition, the group will visit the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat province, along with nearby railways and mining sites, Taliban said.

Afghanistan and Iran share a long border, and trade through western Afghanistan — particularly Herat — is seen as a key driver of economic ties between the two countries.
