As the deportations from Iran and Pakistan continue, more than 15,800 migrants were repatriated to Afghanistan on Sunday, Sept. 7, according to the Taliban-run Commission for Refugees.
The commission said 8,510 Afghans were deported from Iran and 7,324 from Pakistan on Sunday, some forcibly and others voluntarily.
The returnees entered Afghanistan through border crossings at Torkham, Spin Boldak, Bahramcha, Islam Qala and Pul-e Abrisham, the statement said.
Both Iran and Pakistan have intensified mass deportations of Afghans over the past two years, forcing millions to return.
Pakistan in particular has set multiple deadlines for undocumented Afghans to leave, most recently warning of nationwide crackdowns and mass arrests if they remain beyond the announced dates.
The expulsions come as Afghanistan faces reports of increasing arbitrary arrests and targeted killings of former security personnel and officials, which UNAMA, the UN mission in Afghanistan, has previously documented.
