Human rights activists and civil society members in a statement decried the arrest of activist Mojtaba Mohammadi by the Taliban, saying that it is part of “the Taliban’s ongoing campaign to suppress civil society and silence dissent”.

In a joint statement, the activists called the detention a clear violation of freedom of expression and civil liberties—rights they say are fundamental to all individuals.

The statement urged international human rights organizations, free speech advocates and the global community to take immediate action for Mohammadi’s “unconditional release.”

The activists stressed that Mohammadi “committed no crime” and was detained solely for advocating justice, freedom and the basic rights of Afghan citizens.

Sources previously told Amu TV that Mohammadi, a civil society activist and human rights defender, was arrested by Taliban intelligence forces.

According to the sources, Taliban agents raided his home on Thursday during the first week of Sunbula (August-September) and took him into custody—just four days after he was forcibly deported from Iran.

Family members said more than a week has passed since his arrest, yet his whereabouts remain unknown.

Local sources added that Mohammadi is reportedly being held under torture by Taliban intelligence.
