Women injured in the earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday night are facing serious difficulties due to a shortage of female doctors, local sources told Amu.
According to the sources, local residents have appealed to Taliban authorities to allow female physicians to work in the affected areas to help treat the wounded.
This comes as Taliban have banned women from medical education as well as attending universities. International organizations have already warned that the ban would further worsen the country’s fragile health system.
The quake, which struck just after midnight near Asadabad in Kunar province, had a magnitude of 6.0 and a depth of about 27 kilometers (17 miles) near Jalalabad, according to preliminary reports.
The death toll from the earthquake has surpassed 800, according to Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, who said that 2,500 others have been wounded.
