The Taliban-run Finance Ministry has resumed paying pensions to retired civil and military employees, sources from the ministry said on Sunday.
The ministry said payments will be made only to retirees whose documents have been processed and approved by a special tribunal the Taliban previously set up to review pension claims.
The decision comes after months of complaints from pensioners who said they had not received their payments since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
The Taliban-run Finance Ministry estimates that about 152,000 retirees are eligible for payments, while a United Nations report last year put the figure at around 170,000.
Afghanistan’s already fragile economy has faced further strain under Taliban rule, with many public sector workers, including retirees, struggling to receive regular salaries and benefits.
