Expressions of grief poured in Wednesday after a deadly traffic accident in western province of Herat left 79 dead and two wounded.
The European Union Delegation to Afghanistan said it was “profoundly saddened” by the crash in Herat. “We extend our heartfelt and sincere condolences to the victims’ families and friends,” the delegation said on social media.
Former President Hamid Karzai also issued a statement of sympathy, saying the news of the deaths had left him deeply saddened. He offered condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
The Taliban administration described the incident as a “painful tragedy” and prayed for the dead and injured. In its statement, it directed transportation officials to investigate the accident and determine responsibility.
The crash happened late Tuesday in Guzara district on the Herat–Islam Qala highway when a bus carrying deported migrants from Iran collided with a truck and a motorcycle before bursting into flames, officials said.
