As the deportations by Iran continue, 6,018 migrants were repatriated to Afghanistan on Sunday, August 3, up from 3,000 in the previous day, according to figures by the Taliban’s refugee commission.

The migrants were expelled through the Islam Qala and Pul-e Abrisham border crossings in Herat and Nimroz provinces, respectively.

At the same time, Pakistan deported 450 Afghans, both forcibly and voluntarily, via the Torkham, Bahramcha and Spin Boldak crossings, the commission said.

Data reviewed by Amu show that between July 25 and Aug. 1, more than 85,000 Afghans — an average of 10,000 a day — were deported from Iran, along with more than 3,000 from Pakistan.

Figures by the Taliban-run National Statistics and Information Authority show that 1.8 million Afghans have been expelled from Iran over the past three months alone.

The UN refugee agency has also reported mass returns from Pakistan, saying 1.2 million Afghans went back between Sept. 15, 2023, and June 30, 2024.

Despite international criticism, both Iran and Pakistan have continued to intensify deportations. Returnees told Amu they faced beatings, confiscation of property and other mistreatment during the process.
