The United Nations General Assembly will convene a special session on Monday to address the situation in Afghanistan, with particular focus on the situation of women and girls.
The session, set to begin at 10 a.m. New York time, is expected to include the adoption of a nonbinding resolution reaffirming the global community’s commitment to the rights, dignity and aspirations of the Afghan people. The resolution will highlight support for a peaceful, inclusive future for the country.
“The UN General Assembly will convene on Monday, 7 July at 10:00 a.m. (New York time) to consider the situation in Afghanistan,” Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, wrote on social media. The meeting will also feature a statement from the Afghan mission, he added.
The session comes amid escalating international concern over the Taliban’s continued crackdown on basic freedoms since regaining control of power in August 2021. Women and girls remain barred from most education and employment, while civil society groups and independent media face increasing restrictions.
Though the resolution carries no legal force, diplomats say it is intended to send a unified message of support for Afghan civil liberties and human rights.
