Heavy rains triggered flash floods across parts of Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan, killing two children and causing extensive damage to farmland and homes, the Taliban-run disaster management authority said in a statement on Sunday.
The flooding affected several districts, including Goshta, Lal Pur, Nazyan, Momand Dara and Shewa, the statement said.
In addition to the fatalities, the statement said the floods destroyed approximately 5,000 jeribs (roughly 1,000 hectares) of agricultural land and damaged at least 280 homes.
The scale of the financial loss was not immediately clear, but local residents reported that the floods swept away crops, livestock, and infrastructure in the affected areas.
Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, with limited resources to respond to seasonal floods, landslides, and droughts. Humanitarian groups have repeatedly warned that the country’s weakened institutions and shrinking international aid make recovery efforts increasingly difficult.
