China ‘welcomes’ Russia’s recognition of Taliban

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, at a press briefing on Friday, in response to a question about Russia’s recognition of the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, said that China welcomes the latest developments in relations between Russia and the Taliban.

When asked whether China has similar plans, Mao noted that since the return of the Taliban, “the diplomatic missions of the two sides have maintained normal operations in each other’s territory, playing a positive role in promoting bilateral relations”.

She added that China will continue to pursue a friendly policy toward all Afghan people and support exchanges and cooperation across various fields between China and Afghanistan.

Although China has not officially recognized the Taliban administration, it remains among a small group of countries that have accepted Taliban-appointed diplomats. In September 2023, Beijing sent its own ambassador to Kabul, marking one of the highest-level diplomatic engagements with the Taliban to date.
