The senior officials meeting on Afghanistan opened Monday morning in Brussels, bringing together international stakeholders to address the country’s deepening political instability and ongoing humanitarian emergency.
The meeting, hosted by the European Union, includes participation from EU member states as well as Mary Bischoping, US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Afghanistan. Representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) are also in attendance.
The agenda focuses on two critical areas: the political situation in Afghanistan under Taliban control, and the worsening humanitarian conditions affecting millions across the country.
The gathering comes as Afghanistan faces growing challenges in the delivery of aid and an ongoing lack of political inclusivity. UNAMA recently initiated consultations on a proposed “mosaic framework” aimed at facilitating dialogue and potential pathways for political stabilization.
