A young woman in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province died after setting herself on fire, following what sources described as ongoing domestic violence.
The woman, identified as Abida, was a resident of Taywara district and had been married for about four years to a man named Mohammad Azim, local sources told Amu. It remains unclear whether her husband had ties to the Taliban, but sources said that domestic conflict was the primary cause of the tragedy.
Abida’s death has triggered widespread outrage among human rights and women’s rights activists, many of whom launched a social media campaign under the slogan “I am Abida’s voice,” calling for greater attention to domestic violence and the deteriorating conditions for women.
The incident comes as Afghanistan faces mounting criticism over the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls, who have been largely stripped of basic rights such as education, employment, and freedom of movement since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
