Local sources told Amu TV that an emergency meeting was held in Kandahar City on the orders of Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, bringing together the Taliban governors of Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, and Helmand.
The meeting, chaired by Mullah Shirin, the Taliban governor of Kandahar, took place on Tuesday morning and focused on security concerns, internal Taliban tensions, and border issues with Pakistan, sources said.
Discussions centered on preventing potential ISIS attacks in the spring, securing key border routes, and addressing growing instability within the Taliban’s ranks.
One source noted that Taliban officials were urged to increase public engagement and visits to different regions to manage internal rifts and counter negative propaganda.
During the meeting, Governor Shirin warned about Taliban members’ indirect involvement in drug trafficking and called for a crackdown on illicit activities. He also emphasized the need to monitor the activities of organizations operating in the southern provinces under the guise of humanitarian work.
Meanwhile, Helmand’s governor raised concerns about the presence of unidentified armed groups in Bahramcha, a key smuggling hub near the Pakistan border, revealing that additional weapons and ammunition had been deployed to the area.
The Kandahar Governor’s Office later confirmed the emergency meeting but did not disclose details of the discussions.
The meeting comes as security measures have been significantly tightened in Kandahar city and surrounding districts, particularly in strategic locations, over the past several days.
