ROME — The Italian government has donated $4.7 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday. The funds will enable humanitarian partners to provide lifesaving assistance to the country’s most vulnerable populations, according to OCHA.
The donation comes as Afghanistan faces a dire humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations reporting that nearly 23 million people — including over 12 million children — are in urgent need of assistance.
Last December, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned that millions of Afghans are at risk of enduring a harsh winter without adequate food supplies due to severe funding shortages. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the organization said it would only be able to assist six million people during the winter season, far short of the number requiring help.
As funding gaps widen, humanitarian agencies continue to appeal for increased international support to address Afghanistan’s growing needs.
