WASHINGTON — Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee has extended an invitation to Amrullah Saleh, the former vice president of Afghanistan, for discussions in Washington regarding Afghanistan’s future and the welfare of its people.
In a post on X, Burchett underscored the ongoing threat posed by Taliban rule to U.S. national security.
“As long as the Taliban remain in control of Afghanistan, it remains a threat to the United States,” he wrote.
Burchett has been a vocal critic of the Taliban. In September, he introduced legislation supporting a political platform that opposes Taliban governance. The bill also calls for U.S. involvement in the Vienna Process, a diplomatic initiative aimed at uniting Afghan political factions against the Taliban.
Speaking to Amu in September, Burchett reiterated his belief that the U.S. should halt all financial support to Afghanistan under Taliban rule. “The Taliban should not have access to American resources,” he said.
