Six wounded Afghan migrants were transferred to a hospital in Nimroz province following an alleged shooting by Iranian border guards earlier this month, sources reported.
The incident occurred on October 13 as migrants attempted to cross from Pakistan into Iran, with reports emerging that dozens may have been injured or killed.
According to sources, the injured individuals had initially been detained by Pakistani authorities before being taken to Nimroz on Sunday night, October 13.
Video footage recorded by some of the migrants reveals that the group, numbering about 300 and split into units of 50, came under fire from Iranian border guards as they attempted to cross the border. Afghan migrants in the video claimed several casualties, with two reported dead and others wounded.
The Taliban government has yet to release information on the total number of casualties but has reportedly formed a delegation to investigate. Iran, meanwhile, denied any incident involving its border forces, despite reports from Halvah, a human rights organization in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province, stating that “dozens of Afghan migrants” were killed or injured.
In fresh footage, migrants recounted harrowing details of the incident. “We were divided into groups of 50. When we crossed the border, they opened fire. We have seven or eight wounded, two are dead, and we had been without food for days,” one Afghan migrant reported. Another migrant claimed, “We still have friends missing; we don’t know if they were killed or injured.”
The exact toll remains unclear, as some migrants suggest that others are still unaccounted for. Sources indicate that the footage was filmed at a camp in Pakistan, where injured migrants returning from Iran were gathered.
The Taliban government has not provided details on the incident’s casualties or the number of those transferred to Nimroz. The United Nations and other international bodies have called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the events along the Iran-Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
