Authorities in Taybad, a city in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, have sealed 16 residences rented to Afghan migrants, Iranian media reported. The move comes amid Iran’s heightened enforcement of regulations governing undocumented foreign nationals.

Hojat Sediqi, the attorney general of Taybad, warned that individuals renting homes to undocumented migrants could face legal consequences. “Real estate agents and others involved in renting residential units to undocumented foreign nationals have been referred to judicial authorities and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said, according to IRIB News Agency.

So far this year, Sediqi noted, roughly 23,000 Afghan migrants have been arrested and deported from Taybad to Afghanistan. He added that renting, selling, or making any real estate transactions with undocumented foreign nationals in Taybad County is prohibited by law and considered a punishable offense.

The increased enforcement follows longstanding concerns among Afghan migrants in Iran, who have reported cases of mistreatment, including claims of physical abuse and verbal harassment by Iranian authorities. Iran has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to deporting undocumented Afghan nationals.
