Iran’s president meets Modi, emphasizes support for peace in Afghanistan

KAZAN, Russia — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit, to discuss regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan.

According to Iranian media reports, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for regional cooperation to support Afghanistan’s future, stating that dialogue and engagement with Afghanistan are crucial for building stability.

“We must help the people of Afghanistan achieve peace, stability, and prosperity by resolving their challenges,” Pezeshkian said during the meeting. “The Islamic Republic of Iran supports any efforts that contribute to peace and tranquility in Afghanistan.”

Indian media described the meeting as productive, with Prime Minister Modi highlighting bilateral ties and discussing ways to strengthen cooperation, particularly in forward-looking sectors. The two leaders also discussed key areas of collaboration, including the development of Iran’s Chabahar port and the International North-South Transport Corridor.

The meeting took place amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with both leaders underscoring the importance of peace in West Asia.

This was the first meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian since the Iranian president took office.
