UN appeals for over $600 million for winter aid in Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has launched an appeal for $603 million to fund “urgently needed winter preparedness” efforts in Afghanistan, the agency said in a statement.

OCHA identified 171 districts as high-priority and 277 as medium-priority areas for assistance. The agency stressed that $104 million is required immediately to pre-position supplies before winter sets in, ensuring aid reaches affected regions in time.

The UN has previously warned that nearly 24 million people in Afghanistan are in need of humanitarian assistance. Despite the growing need, the agency has voiced concerns about a severe funding shortfall, revealing that only about 25 percent of the required budget has been met.
