ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan has deported 32,200 Afghan migrants between July 21 and August 17, as part of an ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants, according to official figures reported by Pakistani media.
The recent deportations bring the total number of Afghans expelled from Pakistan to 691,853 since the country began its campaign last October.
The repatriation process has included 732 families, who were transported in 674 vehicles, officials said as quoted by Pakistani media on Monday, August 19.
The situation for many of those returning to Afghanistan remains dire. Facing a shortage of shelter and employment opportunities, numerous returnees have sought refuge in unfinished buildings across Kabul.
The Taliban-run Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation reported on Monday that 55 families were deported by Pakistan on Sunday, August 18, and crossed into Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak border crossing in Kandahar province.
