The World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it has provided specialized nutritious food to more than 1.6 million pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in Afghanistan to combat and prevent malnutrition. However, due to funding shortfalls, an additional 600,000 women will be deprived of this vital support.
The announcement follows a recent WFP report highlighting that at least three million children in Afghanistan are currently facing malnutrition, underscoring the severe hunger crisis in the country.
In early July, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) attributed the rise in malnutrition to worsening economic conditions and widespread poverty. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) also reported that around 52 percent of newborns in Afghanistan lack access to healthy milk.
