Bennett condemns 1,000 ‘unacceptable’ days of girls’ school closures in Afghanistan, calls for support

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, marked the 1,000th day of girls’ school closures in Afghanistan with a strong message of condemnation and support.

Despite enduring 1,000 “unacceptable, almost unthinkable” days of a ban on secondary education for girls, millions of Afghan girls continue to hold on to their dreams, Bennett noted.

“We must be equally relentless in our resolve to stand with them,” he urged.

“Together, we must all advocate for the right to education for every girl in Afghanistan. Education is not only a human right that cannot wait for them, but it is also a powerful catalyst for a better, more equitable, and prosperous world,” he added.

The Taliban banned girls from attending secondary schools in September 2021, a month after they seized power in the country.
