Taliban flogs individual in Parwan for alcohol charges

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban administered a public flogging to an individual in Parwan province, north of Kabul, on charges of transporting alcoholic beverages, according to a statement from the Taliban-run Supreme Court.

The individual received 39 lashes and was sentenced to two years in prison, the court said.

This punishment is part of the Taliban’s enforcement of its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Since December 2022, when the Taliban leader reinstated corporal punishment, hundreds of individuals have been lashed, many in public, for various alleged crimes.

The reintroduction of such punishments has drawn international condemnation and raised concerns about human rights violations under the Taliban regime.
