Taliban administers public flogging in Ghazni

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged an individual 39 times in Ghazni province’s Deh Yak district, the Taliban-run supreme court announced on Wednesday.

The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was lashed on May 26 after being charged with adultery, according to the court’s statement. In addition to the flogging, the person was sentenced to two years in prison.

Since seizing control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban has imposed corporal punishments on hundreds of people, including several executions.

Human rights organizations have expressed concern over the lack of access to legal representation and fair trials within the Taliban’s judicial system. The absence of due process and the implementation of severe punishments have drawn widespread international condemnation.
