The 11th edition of the Herat Security Dialogue unfolded in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Monday, hosting 150 participants from 20 countries, international organizations, as well as representatives from political groups and former government officials of Afghanistan.
Themed “Reimagining Afghanistan: Ways Forward,” this two-day conference aims to provide a platform for comprehensive dialogue on the future of Afghanistan.
Davood Moradian, the head of the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies, highlighted the focus of this year’s discussions, emphasizing considerations for the future of Afghanistan and the potential role of the Taliban in shaping the nation’s destiny.
“The focus of this year’s talks is more for the future of Afghanistan; that is, what should be done? Can the Taliban be part of the solution? If the Taliban have the will and capacity to be part of the solution, let’s start slowly to draw a post-Taliban Afghanistan,” Moradian explained.
Prominent political figures and former government officials of Afghanistan participated in the Herat Security meeting, including Mohammad Ismail Khan, Mohammad Zahir Agbar, Rahmatullah Nabil, Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Mohammad Alam Izdiyar, Shokria Barikzai, and others.
During the event, Spanta attributed the fall of the Afghan government to the Taliban to the inefficiency of the former government, stating, “The reality is that the Taliban took over power in Afghanistan as a result of the inefficiency of the government of the Republic of Afghanistan and as a result of the structural changes in the international political system and the demands of the new strategy at the world level.”
He emphasized that the diverse resistance of the Afghan people goes beyond diplomatic discussions and military aspirations, urging for a comprehensive approach that considers moral arguments.
This marks the second Herat Security Dialogue in Tajikistan following the fall of the Republic of Afghanistan’s regime. Previously, Herat Security Dialogue meetings were held in the city of Herat, featuring representatives from various countries, organizations, and political and governmental figures.
