Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 129 people in Rwanda, authorities said on Wednesday, as rescuers hunted survivors trapped in homes.
Residents in Rubavu district pulled whatever belongings they could salvage from their flooded homes as muddy water flowed swiftly down inundated roads and destroyed houses.
Claire Uwineza, a local resident, stood around in disbelief at the little that was left of their home and possessions. “I am safe but all my belongings are gone,” she said.
Augustin Nsanzineza told Reuters he was lucky to have managed to escape after flood waters came into his house.
Meanwhile, President Paul Kagame said in a statement his government was helping affected people including with temporary relocations.
