Gunmen storm hotel in downtown Kabul

group on gunmen, reported to be equipped with suicide vests, attacked a hotel in downtown Kabul on Monday afternoon.

Sources said many explosions and sporadic gunfight was heard from the area.

Sources said that Chinese nationals are stationed at the hotel.

Footage on social media show flames and smoke billowing out windows on the first floor of the hotel.

While no confirmation has been received on reports that Chinese nationals are being accommodated at the hotel, this attack comes just hours after China’s ambassador to Kabul Wang Yu met with Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Taliban’s deputy foreign minister, over safety concerns.

The meeting took place on Sunday where Wang asked for security to be “beefed up”.

This comes after an attack earlier this month on Pakistan’s envoy Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani at his embassy compound in Kabul. Nizamani survived the shooting but one of his guards was wounded. Daesh claimed responsibility for that attack.
