Switzerland has contributed $1.95 million to the United Nations Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday, as aid agencies continue to warn of a severe funding shortfall.

According to OCHA, the contribution will help provide emergency assistance to people whose lives have been disrupted by humanitarian crises and sudden shocks.

The latest donation adds to Switzerland’s longstanding humanitarian support for Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

The Swiss government has provided 64 million Swiss francs in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan over the past five years, including 30 million francs in April 2022, 33 million francs in September 2025, and an additional 1 million francs later that month, according to OCHA.

The announcement comes as UN agencies warn that humanitarian operations in Afghanistan remain critically underfunded.

Earlier this year, OCHA said humanitarian organizations require $1.71 billion to respond to Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs in 2026. As of early June, however, donors had provided only $269 million, or 16 percent of the required funding.

“The growing funding gap is threatening life-saving humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan,” OCHA said in a recent statement, warning that millions of people could be left without essential aid unless additional funding is secured.

Afghanistan remains one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with millions of people facing food insecurity, economic hardship and the impact of repeated climate-related disasters, according to the United Nations.
