A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen at his home in northern Afghanistan’s Samangan province, Taliban police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night, April 15, in the Akbarabad area, according to a statement from the Taliban Taliban command in the province.
The victim, identified as Fathullah, son of Mohammad Ashraf, worked as a guard at a local caravanserai in the provincial capital, Aybak, the statement said.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, and Taliban have not provided further details about the circumstances of the attack or possible suspects.
The incident comes amid a recent increase in reported shootings across the country. Over the past week, at least 16 people have been killed in separate incidents in Herat and Baghlan, according to local sources.
In Herat, a deadly shooting on Friday, April 10, that killed multiple civilians, many of them members of the Shiite community, has drawn particular concern. Residents staged protests following the attack, carrying the bodies of victims and chanting slogans against terrorism.
The killing in Samangan adds to growing fears among residents about security and the persistence of unexplained violence in several parts of the country.
