Pakistani forces fired artillery into parts of eastern Afghanistan overnight, causing damage but no reported casualties, according to local sources in Kunar province.

Residents said the shelling targeted areas in Khas Kunar and Nari districts and continued intermittently from earlier in the day until late at night. While no deaths or injuries were reported, the shelling damaged property and heightened fears among local communities.

The incident comes amid ongoing tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where clashes have escalated since Feb. 26. The violence has included cross-border shelling, airstrikes and ground engagements, raising concerns about a broader conflict between Taliban and Pakistan’s military.

Efforts to ease tensions have so far yielded limited results. Delegations from the Taliban and Pakistan met in the Chinese city of Urumqi from April 1 to 7 for talks aimed at reducing hostilities, but the negotiations ended without a concrete agreement.

After the meetings, China’s Foreign Ministry said both sides had agreed to continue dialogue and work toward de-escalation, though sporadic violence has persisted along the border.

For residents in provinces like Kunar, the continued exchanges of fire have disrupted daily life and underscored the fragility of the situation, even as diplomatic efforts remain underway.
