An Afghan boxer, Fereshta Khani, has won a gold medal at Pakistan’s national boxing championships, marking a notable achievement for Afghanistan’s athletes competing abroad.
The tournament, held in Hyderabad in Pakistan’s Sindh Province, brought together athletes from more than 20 regions, including Sindh, Punjab and Islamabad, and lasted nearly a week.
Khani competed in the 50-kilogram weight class and secured the title after defeating all of her opponents, according to information released about the event. She won three bouts on her way to the championship, delivering what observers described as a standout performance.
Despite facing some competitors who were competing at higher weight ranges, up to 55 kilograms, Khani demonstrated clear dominance throughout the competition.
Khani announced her victory on social media, describing it as an important milestone for both herself and Afghanistan.
The achievement drew praise from former President Hamid Karzai, who said: “I congratulate Fereshta Khani for winning the gold medal in the wrestling competitions in Pakistan. I wish her and all the athletes of the country further brilliance and successes in every branch of sports.”
The victory comes at a time when women athletes are banned from all type of sports in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
