Two civilians, including a woman and her child, were killed when Pakistani shelling hit a civilian vehicle in the eastern province of Nuristan on Thursday, said Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat.
Fitrat said the incident occurred around 11 a.m. Thursday in the Kamdesh district.
He said a projectile fired by Pakistani forces struck a civilian vehicle, killing a female doctor, identified as Anzira Sahar, and her 4-year-old son, Maihan, after they fell into a river.
Fitrat said continued firing initially prevented the recovery of the bodies, which remained at the scene until Friday afternoon, when local residents and Taliban forces were able to retrieve them from the Kamari Gul area.
He added that in a separate incident in Sheltan district of neighboring Kunar province, a civilian identified as Sulaiman was seriously wounded by Pakistani fire.
Pakistan has not commented on the specific incidents. However, its information ministry on Friday rejected broader Taliban claims of ceasefire violations, calling them “false.”
The incidents come despite a temporary ceasefire announced by both sides on Wednesday for Eid al-Fitr, following mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey.
Taliban defense ministry has accused Pakistani forces of violating the truce in border areas, while Pakistan denies any breach.
Clashes between the two sides have entered their fourth week. The United Nations has said at least 76 civilians were killed and more than 200 injured in eastern Afghanistan during the first two weeks of the fighting.
