A new clash between the Taliban and Pakistani troops erupted Wednesday evening in Dand-e-Patan district of Paktia province in southeastern Afghanistan, local sources said.

The fighting took place in the border area of Maqbal, the sources said, though they did not provide details about what prompted the confrontation.

Taliban officials have not publicly commented on the incident. Pakistan’s military has also not issued a statement.

The reported clash comes a day after separate border fighting between Taliban and Pakistani forces in eastern Afghanistan.

Tensions have escalated once again since Saturday night, when Pakistan carried out airstrikes in parts of eastern Afghanistan. According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, at least 13 civilians were killed in those strikes.
