At least 85 Afghan nationals have been executed in Iran since the start of this year, according to Hengaw, an Iran-based human rights organisation.

Hengaw said Iranian authorities carried out the execution of an Afghan prisoner identified as Bismillah Tajik early on Sunday at Bandar Abbas central prison. He had been convicted of murder, the group said.

With his execution, the number of Afghan citizens put to death in Iran since the beginning of 2025 has reached 85, Hengaw added, citing data from its documentation centre.

Iranian state media had not reported the execution at the time of publication.

Hengaw said executions of Afghan nationals in Iran have continued at what it described as an alarming pace this year and criticised what it called a lack of transparency in official reporting on death sentences involving foreign prisoners.

Iran carries out more executions than any country except China, according to international rights groups, and migrants have frequently been among those sentenced to death, often for drug-related or violent crimes.
