Archaeological site dating to pre-Christian era discovered in eastern Afghanistan: Statement

A new archaeological site believed to date back to the pre-Christian era was discovered in the eastern province of Laghman, the Taliban-run provincial culture department said in a statement on Sunday.

The site was found in the Alingar district, in an area known as Situn village in the Saw valley, said statement said.

Preliminary excavations uncovered a number of historical remains, the department added.

The findings include a stone staircase, 12 chambers and other architectural elements linked to ancient periods, according to the statement.

Based on available evidence, the statement said the site dates to before the birth of Christ and could contribute to a better understanding of Laghman’s ancient history and the region’s early civilisations.

Laghman province has previously been home to several archaeological discoveries, with the department saying multiple historical sites have been identified and registered in recent years.
