Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow must maintain direct communication with the Taliban to shape developments in the country, arguing the Taliban now exert clear control and are taking steps against terrorism and narcotics production.
“In every country there are problems, and Afghanistan is not an exception,” Putin said in an interview with Indian media during his visit to New Delhi. “But the Taliban clearly controls the situation… you have to accept it because it’s reality.”
Putin said the Taliban had taken “many actions to combat terrorism and various terrorist organizations, including ISIL,” and claimed they had “significantly reduced opium production” while working to curb drug-related threats.
“The main point is that in order to influence events happening in the country, you must stay in contact with the current leadership there. Exactly what we are doing,” he said.
Russia formally recognized the Taliban administration in July 2025 — becoming the first country to do so since they seized power in 2021. Moscow has repeatedly raised concerns about the presence of militant groups in Afghanistan, warning that instability could spill into Central Asia and threaten regional security.
