EU envoy highlights support for Afghan returnees during visit to Nimruz

The EU chargé d’affaires to Afghanistan, Veronika Boškovic Pohar, said Wednesday that the European Union stands firm in its commitment to helping Afghan returnees, following a field visit to transit and reception centers in Nimruz province.

Pohar, along with representatives from EU Humanitarian Aid‑Asia Pacific (ECHO‑Asia) and the International Organization for Migration in Afghanistan (IOM), toured the Zaranj Transit and Reception Centers and a nearby border point.

The trip was aimed at assessing the needs of returnees arriving in Nimruz and coordinating emergency assistance, the EU mission in Afghanistan said.

“Had an efficient visit to Nimruz with ECHO‑Asia and IOM Afghanistan. I thank all partners for their work,” Pohar said in a written statement. “We will work to address the identified needs and step up our efforts and support in Nimruz for health, water and returnees.”

The EU delegation said the mission underscores its ongoing efforts to deliver emergency and basic‑needs support to returnees in one of Afghanistan’s key entry points. The officials said many of the returnees arriving at Zaranj face urgent needs — including shelter, clean water, medical services and protection.

The visit comes amid rising numbers of Afghans returning from neighboring countries, under pressure from deportations and migration crackdowns.
