At least 10 people were killed and 12 others injured in a traffic accident on the Herat-Kandahar highway, local Taliban police officials said Sunday.
The crash occurred late Saturday in Zawol district when a 302-type passenger bus traveling toward Kandahar collided with a minivan heading to Herat from Daikundi, according to the Taliban-run Herat police command. Women and children were among the victims.
Yar Mohammad Sadiq, administrative deputy of the Taliban police headquarters in Zawol district, said some of the injured were taken to the Shindand district hospital, while others — along with the bodies of the dead — were transferred to Herat Regional Hospital.
The cause of the collision remains unclear. Poor road conditions and driver negligence are frequently cited as major factors in deadly traffic incidents across Afghanistan.
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 4,700 people are killed each year in traffic-related accidents in Afghanistan.
In one of the country’s deadliest road accidents, a bus overturn in Herat province in August 2025 left at least 76 people dead, including several children.
