Iran sends fourth aid shipment to Afghanistan quake survivors

Iran delivered a fourth shipment of aid for earthquake survivors in eastern Afghanistan to Herat Province on Thursday, the country’s diplomatic office in Kabul said.

Iran’s diplomatic office in Kabul said the shipment includes 22 tons of rice, provided by the Iranian Red Crescent.

With this delivery, Iran’s total contribution has reached 220 tons of aid, according to the office.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck Kunar and surrounding provinces on August 31, killing more than 2,200 people and wounding over 3,600, according to the United Nations. It also destroyed at least 6,700 homes, leaving tens of thousands homeless. Survivors say that aid has been slow to arrive and that their most urgent need remains shelter, particularly as colder weather sets in.

Taliban have confirmed receiving shipments from several countries, but residents in affected areas complain that distribution has been uneven and insufficient.

An Amu TV survey of international pledges found that more than $25 million in cash and relief supplies has been committed by governments and organizations, including the United Nations, China, the European Union, Qatar and others. Deliveries have included tents, blankets, medical kits and food.

Despite the inflow of aid, humanitarian groups warn that thousands of families remain exposed in the open, with limited access to food, clean water or medical care.
