The Taliban governor of Bamiyan province has blocked a planned religious gathering organized by Shiite Muslims to mark the Prophet Mohammad’s birthday, according to local sources.
The event, which was scheduled for Monday, Sept. 8, was to be held at the Shaheed Mazari Grand Mosque in Bamiyan and feature remarks by Ayatollah Waezzada Behsudi, a prominent Shiite cleric.
Sources familiar with the matter told Amu TV that the provincial intelligence agency, operating under the Taliban rule, briefly detained the individual responsible for coordinating the event before releasing him.
According to those sources, Taliban officials accused the organizers of plotting “conspiracy against the regime” — a claim often used by the group to justify crackdowns on perceived dissent or gatherings not sanctioned by its leadership.
As of Tuesday, Taliban authorities had not issued any official comment regarding the cancellation.
