Separate traffic accidents in the northern provinces of Samangan and Jawzjan, as well as the central province of Bamiyan, left eight people dead and nine others injured, including a child, Taliban officials said Tuesday.

Taliban police command in Jawzjan confirmed that eight people were killed and four injured in a crash Monday night on the Balkh-Jawzjan highway.

The accident occurred in the village of Chakosh in Aqcha district, according to a statement.

In Samangan province, four people were injured when a Toyota Corolla veered off the road and overturned in the Yakatut area of Aybak city, said Heshmatullah Rahmani, spokesman for the provincial police.

Separately, a 9-year-old girl was injured when a motorcycle hit a pedestrian in the Yakawlang district of Bamiyan province. Police said the incident happened Monday evening in the vegetable market area.

Road accidents have recently surged across Afghanistan, killing dozens and injuring many more. Residents cite poor road conditions, lack of traffic signs, the use of right-hand-drive vehicles and reckless driving as major causes.
