Taliban security official in Faryab arrested over multiple targeted killings: Sources

A Taliban security official in northern Faryab province has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in multiple targeted killings, local sources told Amu on Tuesday.

The official, identified as Khalid Akka, the head of Taliban’s third security district in Faryab, was detained along with two associates and later transferred to Kabul, the sources said. The associates were identified as Hojatullah and Hikmatullah.

According to the sources, Akka is accused of carrying out the assassinations of Mohammad Saleh, a former district secretary in Almar, Mohibullah Mirzad, and several others in recent months.

Taliban authorities in Faryab had previously attributed such killings of former officials to unidentified gunmen.

The sources added that Taliban police chief in Faryab recently appointed Saifullah Habib Taheri to replace Akka as head of the third security district.

Taliban officials have not commented publicly on the arrests.
